”StopAids Nyhedsbreve” Newsletters for Gay Men and MSM, Landsforeningen for bøsser og lesbiske, StopAids, Copenhagen, Denmark, Mar – Dec 1987
Notes
StopAids began as the HIV/AIDS campaign of Landsforeningen for bøsser og lesbiske (LBL), the national association of gays and lesbians in Denmark. The campaign aimed to provide information to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS among gay men and other men who have sex with men (MSM). In addition, the campaign worked to combat the stigma of people living with HIV or AIDS and prevent homophobia. The campaign became independent in 1994 before ultimately fusing with AIDS-Fondet, the Danish AIDS Foundation.
From 1987 to 2000, StopAids published a fortnightly newsletter informing about activities and developments in queer communities and beyond. While targeted at gay men and other MSM, the newsletters also reported on issues relating to other groups hit hard by the HIV/AIDS-epidemic, such as drug users, sex workers, racialized minorities and hemophiliacs. In addition, the newsletters closely followed all political, medical and other developments related to HIV/AIDS in Denmark and beyond.
1987, the first year of the StopAids campaign, was marked by formalizing the Danish political response to HIV/AIDS in March, and by an onset of large public information campaigns, the distribution of free condoms and medical developments in Denmark and abroad.
