Magyar Hangtár / Hungarian Audio Database
Department for Hungarian Literature and Culture of the Humboldt University Berlin
Who is the audio database intended for
Learners of Hungarian who wish to improve their listening skills.
Teachers of Hungarian who wish to use more audio and video materials in their classes.
What you can find in the database
Audio recordings (conversations, short presentations) in mp3 format and related documents such as Hungarian/German/English vocabulary lists and, in some cases, exercises as well as transcripts.
NEW: Video recordings of authentic scenes - with or without Hungarian subtitles, and transcription
How to find your way through the recordings
In “Simple Search” on the right-hand side you can search defining key words, the type of resources (audio, video) but also by topic (“Témakör / topic”) and by level (“Szint / level”). Not all search results will appear on one page. To move back and forth between the pages use the "Back" and "Forward" buttons.
What you can do with the materials
You can read, watch and listen online or save the materials on your own computer or mobile device. Is the pace of the text too fast, you can slow it down by using Windows Media Player without reducing its quality. You can use the data according to the licencing terms.
How the recordings and written documents relate to each other
To every audio and video recording belongs a document with the same title. By clicking on the recording, the related document will be displayed in the field “Related Resources” at the end of the page. It also works the other way round: if you have a document, you will find the related audio and video recording in the list of “Related Resources”.
The same applies for the two versions of the video recordings (with and without subtitles).
What A1, A2, B1 and B2 refer to in "Szint / level"
The letters and numbers indicate the level of difficulty of the recording but should be used for rough orientation only. They are used in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages:
A1 - Beginner
A2 - Elementary level
B1 - Intermediate level
B2 - Upper intermediate level
C1 - Advanced (Effective operational proficiency)
C2 - Mastery or proficiency
Some recordings are available in two different language levels and several recordings are recommended for more than one level.
