On 18 August 1988 University of Zimbabwe students staged a commemoration of DM's death anniversary at Cecil Square, Harare (later: Unity Square); with speeches, poems, banners and a pamphlet/brochure. The tone was of very angry protest against the govt. At the time the first big corruption scandal ("Willowgate") was taking place. Largely from a Marxist perspective they celebrated Marechera as voice of the povo, speaking for the peasants and the proletariat.
