Abstract

This ethnographic film sheds light on the tedious struggles of renaming Berlin's M*straße after Anton Wilhelm Amo, an Afro-German Enlightenment philosopher and anti-racist pioneer. The film's scenery is the setup of the temporary exhibition of the Amo Living Archive on the ground floor of the Institute for European Ethnology (IfEE) at Humboldt University of Berlin. This archive collects and showcases artistic objects and interventions, as well as audiovisual documentation, that have been created by the Amo Collective in connection with the initiatives for renaming the street. The Amo Collective comprises a diverse group of scholars, students, artists, and members of civil society. It emerged from the anti-racist and decolonial struggles surrounding the renaming of the street. During the film's production, the filmmakers collaborated closely with the Amo Collective.
